Stanbic Bank, IMF and Global Investors Target Ghana’s Mining Potential
)
Recognizing the high-return potential of Ghana’s mining sector, global financial institutions are ramping up their investments. Stanbic Bank has committed $1.1 billion to Ghana’s mining, metals and energy sectors over five years, including $100 million in loans for small local contractors, a $90 million loan for a gold mining company’s expansion and an $80 million environmental bond guarantee benefiting six gold mines. Additionally, the International Monetary Fund approved a $360 million credit facility for Ghana as part of a $3 billion Extended Credit Facility, targeting key industries such as mining, energy and agriculture. The World Bank has also reaffirmed its support for Ghana’s mining sector by funding the Ghana Landscape Restoration and Small-Scale Mining Project, which focuses on sustainability and empowering small-scale miners
Earlier this month, UK-based Ghana International Bank, in partnership with British International Investment, announced a $50 million trade finance facility aimed at enhancing trade flows in frontier African economies, including The Gambia, Rwanda and Tanzania. With gold exports accounting for 49.4% of Ghana’s total exports in 2024, this facility is set to strengthen the country’s commodity trade within the region.
Ghana’s Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) also plays a pivotal role in the sector’s growth by using mining royalties to fund strategic projects. Recent investments include support for Castle Minerals’ Kambale Graphite Project, Atlantic Lithium’s Ewoyaa Lithium Project and various gold exploration campaigns across the country. With increasing interest from global financial institutions, Mining in Motion 2025 will bring together Ghana’s top mining projects and investors via a single platform, facilitating partnerships and deal-making opportunities.
