Mining in Motion Summit to Highlight Ghana’s Tech-Driven, Mercury-Free ASGM Expansion
)
The upcoming Mining in Motion Summit - taking place on June 2 - 4, 2025, in Accra - will highlight technologies being implemented to improve productivity and environmental sustainability in Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale mining (ASGM) sector.
A dedicated panel, entitled Technology & Innovation: Advancing Efficiency and Removing Mercury from the ASGM Process, will feature representatives from the Ghana Chamber of Mines, ECOWAS Chamber of Mines, the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, and Ghana’s Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation.
The Minerals Commission of Ghana is conducting a drone piloting training program, which is being rolled out to university students, commission staff, and broader sector stakeholders. As part of a national drive toward automation and digitization, the initiative is designed to enhance regulatory oversight and combat illegal mining activities, promoting sustainable and responsible mining practices.
Ghana is also taking strong steps toward phasing out mercury use in ASGM, in line with its commitments under the Minamata Convention on Mercury. Through the planetGOLD Ghana project, funded by the Global Environment Facility, the country is conducting nationwide workshops to accelerate the adoption of mercury-free gold processing technologies. Complementing this effort, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation are supporting capacity-building through the Africa Environmental Health and Pollution Management Program, financed by the World Bank, which is equipping miners with the training and resources needed to transition away from mercury.
Meanwhile, private sector innovations are also driving change. Commodity Monitor Limited, a Ghanaian logistics and trading firm, has introduced the GoldKacha, a mercury-free rock processing technology that has been endorsed by the Ghana Association of Small-Scale Gold Miners. The technology significantly improves gold recovery rates while ensuring environmental protection and safer working conditions for miners.
Mining in Motion Summit will provide in-depth insights on these and many more gold mining and environmental sustainability solutions, offering a platform for discussion on how emerging technologies can revolutionize gold extraction, promote sustainability, and reduce health risks in Ghana’s ASGM sector.
Organized by the Ashanti Green Initiative – led by Oheneba Kwaku Duah, Prince of Ghana’s Ashanti Kingdom – in collaboration with Ghana’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, World Bank, and the World Gold Council, with the support of Ghana’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the summit offers unparalleled opportunities to connect with industry leaders.
