Ghana: Typhoon Greenfield Development to Expand Mining Portfolio with Two Concessions
Typhoon Greenfield Development Limited (Typhoon) - Ghana’s first small-scale mining firm compliant with the London Bullion Market Association standards - is expanding its gold production by activating two additional concessions.

Speaking to Energy Capital & Power during the Mining in Motion 2025 Summit, Kwaku Afrifa Nsiah-Asare, CEO of Typhoon said the move falls under efforts to support growth within Ghana’s mining sector.

“In the first half of this year, we’ve focused heavily on exploration, in partnership with the University of Mines and Technology, Ghana. Our goal is to bring two more concessions online to complement our current operations,” he said.

Typhoon currently holds six cluster mining concessions in Ghana, with two actively under production. The company is mining a two-hectare site and has reclaimed 180 acres of land previously degraded by illegal mining and planted 15,000 coconut trees as part of its reforestation program.

Nsiah-Asare identified illegal mining as the biggest challenge facing legitimate small-scale miners. “Over the past five years, we’ve tackled this head-on through structured exploration and production. Administrative hurdles are another issue, which is why we’ve established an office in Accra to handle regulatory compliance while production continues on-site,” he explained.

Typhoon is committed to upholding the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s responsible mining principles, in addition to its production expansion plans, he said.

“We aim to ensure that our operations do not contribute to terrorism financing, money laundering, or child labor. Being small-scale doesn’t mean operating illegally or irresponsibly. We must prioritize sustainability in everything we do,” he noted.
