AGI to Connect Ghana’s Mining Sector to Global Networks at AMW 2025
AGI partnered with AMW 2025. What does the collaboration mean for Africa’s mining sector?
Our partnership with AMW reflects AGI’s commitment to connecting Ghana’s mining sector to global networks. AMW provides a powerful platform for us to present Ghana’s mining opportunities, particularly around ASM, to international investors, refiners, and policymakers. Our main goals are to formalize and strengthen ASM through cooperative models and training programs, promote responsible gold sourcing and traceability. We want to foster investment in value addition within Ghana’s mining sector and support land reclamation and environmental restoration efforts.
What core message will AGI deliver at AMW 2025?
Africa must secure a stronger position in global trade, not simply as exporters of raw materials, but as trendsetters in responsible resource extraction and processing. By fostering partnerships between miners, governments, industry players and global institutions, we can responsibly utilize our resources, not at the expense of our environment, but in a way that drives inclusive growth, industrialization, and ecological restoration.
What insights and sector-wide impacts emerged from AGI’s inaugural Mining in Motion conference, held June 2 - 4, 2025?
The event brought together over 600 stakeholders, including ASM players, large-scale mining companies, policymakers, refiners and international investors, to discuss the critical role of ASM in Ghana’s gold economy. Over 15 governments from across Africa and international institutions such as the OECD, the World Gold Council, the London Bullion Market Association, and the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre participated. Producers including Newmont, AngloGold Ashanti, and Gold Fields, also participated. The key takeaway was that ASM is not just an informal segment, but a vital pillar of Ghana’s mining sector that must be supported, formalized, and integrated into the global gold value chain. The event helped foster practical solutions on land reclamation, financing models, responsible sourcing, and building cooperative mining structures. Its impact is already visible in the way stakeholders are now approaching ASM, not as a problem to be solved, but as an opportunity to be harnessed.
What are the future plans for Mining in Motion?
For 2026, we plan to evolve Mining in Motion into a stronger continental platform where governments, mining companies, and development partners can jointly shape Africa’s mining future. A key priority will be to work toward unifying Africa’s policy stance on mineral resources, creating greater alignment across countries while ensuring that Africa’s collective mineral wealth is used to drive prosperity for its people. At the same time, we will continue to place close attention on ASM, ensuring it remains at the heart of discussions, policies, and investment strategies as we build a more sustainable and inclusive mining ecosystem.
